What it means
An investment portfolio is the collection of all the investments you own. It can include shares, funds, bonds, cash and other assets. Rather than judging each investment separately, it's often more useful to think about how your portfolio works as a whole.
Example
You hold a global index fund, a UK bond fund and some cash savings. Together they make up your investment portfolio.
Why it matters
Looking at your portfolio as a whole helps you understand your overall level of risk and diversification.
Two people can own the same investments but in different proportions, giving them very different portfolios.
Can I have a portfolio with only one investment?
Yes. For example, a single global index fund is still an investment portfolio.
